Introduction to the Chase Slate Edge
The Chase Slate Edge℠ can fit the bill if you need a card with a long zero-interest period on balance transfers to pay off an outstanding balance. But that's the main draw of this card, since you won't earn any rewards or a welcome bonus.

Chase Slate Edge Overview
The Chase Slate Edge℠ offers an introductory 0% APR that's one of the longer offers on the market. New cardholders receive a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 18 months from account opening, followed by a 20.49% - 29.24% Variable APR. The card is also included on our list of best balance transfer cards.
But even then, there are plenty of cards available that do earn rewards and come with an intro APR that approaches or matches the offer. For example, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® earns at least 1.5% cash back (1.5 points per dollar) and comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months (then a 19.74% - 28.49% Variable APR).
It might seem odd to open this card when there are seemingly better alternatives available, but there are a couple of other reasons you might consider the card.
First of all, Chase will automatically review you for a higher credit limit if you make your payments on time and spend $500 in your first six months of account opening. And if you spend at least $1,000 on purchases in the previous anniversary year, you'll be considered for a 2% APR reduction each account anniversary — but only up to certain limits (more on that later). That's a unique feature you don't find on other cards, and could be handy for those who tend to carry a balance on their credit card.
But if you already have established credit, opening a 0% APR card that also earns rewards from our list of best 0% APR credit cards is probably a better deal for you.
Chase Slate Edge Rewards
You won't earn any rewards on spending with this card, so there are no rewards to speak of. The only real incentive to use the card is to take advantage of the intro APR, as well as the handful of other benefits and features it offers.
Chase Slate Edge Benefits and Features
It might sound strange, but opening and using a credit card responsibly is actually a great way to build credit and boost your credit score over the long term. Here's how the Chase Slate Edge℠ can help you get there.
Automatic Review for a Higher Credit Limit
If you're working on building your credit, this card could give you a bit of a leg up. You'll receive an automatic, one-time review for a higher credit limit if you've paid on time and spent at least $500 in your first six months of opening the card.
Having a higher credit limit can potentially improve your credit score because it will increase your total amount of available credit. This can improve your credit utilization ratio if you aren't carrying a high balance, which is a major factor in determining your credit score.
APR Reduction of 2% Each Year
Carrying a balance on your credit card isn't a good idea because you'll end up paying interest. But in some cases, doing so is unavoidable due to unexpected financial stress. The Chase Slate Edge℠ comes with an unusual feature that can help reduce the amount of interest you'll pay — but only if you use the card and pay your bills on time.
On every account anniversary, you'll be considered for a 2% APR reduction, as long as you've paid your card on time and spent at least $1,000 on purchases in the previous anniversary year. The reduction is capped; it will only be reduced until your APR reaches the prime rate plus 9.74%. The current prime rate is 7.50% (as of 12/19/2024).
If you find yourself carrying a large balance month to month, this benefit could save you money. But it only starts after a year of having (and using) the card.
Purchase Protection
When you use the card to pay for an eligible item, you'll receive protection against damage or theft within 120 days of purchase. Coverage is up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account.
Extended Warranty
Chase offers an extended warranty benefit on qualifying items, extending the time period of a US manufacturer's warranty (of three years or less) by an additional year.
Car Rental Insurance
If you pay for your rental in full with the Chase Slate Edge℠ and decline the rental company's collision damage waiver, you're eligible for theft and collision damage coverage for most cars in the US and abroad. Coverage is secondary to your own personal insurance in the US, and primary insurance otherwise.
Roadside Dispatch
Cardholders have access to a 24/7 roadside dispatch hotline which can help arrange services like towing, winching, or jumpstarting. The dispatch service itself is free, but you'll be charged for any services rendered.
Complimentary DoorDash DashPass Membership
Cardholders who activate this benefit through January 31, 2025, can receive a complimentary three months of DoorDash DashPass, plus an additional nine months of discounted membership. DashPass membership gets you $0 food delivery fees on DoorDash, and reduced service fees on orders of $12 or more with DoorDash and Caviar.
If you wait until February 1, 2025 to activate, you will receive six months of free DashPass with no discount afterward.
Chase Slate Edge 0% Introductory Offer
While the Chase Slate Edge℠ doesn't have the longest intro APR on purchases and balance transfers on the market right now, the 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 18 months from account opening (then a 20.49% - 29.24% Variable APR) is a respectable offer.
If you have large purchases coming up that you want to pay for over a longer period of time without incurring interest, or you want to consolidate balances from other high-interest credit cards, this deal could save you money. Just be sure you have the ability to pay off your full balance before the introductory APR period is over, otherwise, you could find yourself in even more debt.
Keep in mind you can't use this balance transfer offer to pay off other credit cards or loans issued by Chase.
Chase Slate Edge Annual Fees
This card has no annual fee, so it's free to keep for the long term and potentially increase your average age of accounts (and therefore possibly help boost your credit score). However, it's not a good card to use for international purchases, because it adds foreign transaction fees (3% of the amount of each transaction in US dollars).
- Annual fee: $0
- APR: 20.49% - 29.24% Variable
- Intro APR: 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 18 months from account opening
- Balance transfer fees
- Foreign transaction fees
Like most other cards, there are other charges, including: for balance transfers, cash advances, late payments, and returned payments.
Chase Slate Edge Card Comparison
As we've described here, the Chase Slate Edge℠ isn't a great card for benefits beyond a long intro APR. Here are some other top cards to consider.
Chase Freedom Unlimited® vs. Chase Slate Edge℠
Unlike the Chase Slate Edge℠, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® earns generous rewards.
New cardholders can earn a welcome bonus: additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year). The ongoing rate of return is 5% on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3% on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services, 3% on drugstore purchases, and 1.5% on all other purchases.
Neither card charges an annual fee, and the Chase Freedom Unlimited® also offers a 0% intro APR period: 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 monthsthen a 19.74% - 28.49% Variable APR. The zero-interest period is slightly shorter than that of the Chase Slate Edge℠, but the rewards and benefits may be worth the trade-off.
Wells Fargo Reflect® Card vs. Chase Slate Edge℠
Both cards come with 0% introductory APR offers. In the case of the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card, it's 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers made within 120 days (then 17.24%, 23.74%, or 28.99% Variable APR), which is longer than the Chase Slate Edge℠'s intro period.
Neither card earns rewards or offers much in the way of extra bells and whistles, so the main tipping point to consider would be the additional period of no-interest, as well as the issuer family you prefer - Chase vs. Wells Fargo.
Citi® Double Cash Card vs. Chase Slate Edge℠
While both cards offer intro APR periods, the Citi® Double Cash Card is noteworthy because it earns rewards: 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for a combined total of 2% cash back on everything. If you have any interest in earning rewards at all, we'd highly recommend choosing this card over the Chase Slate Edge℠.
Chase Slate Edge Frequently Asked Questions
The Chase Slate Edge℠ is good for people who want a long 0% APR offer. It might also be worthwhile for those who are working on building their credit or who want to lower their APR because they often carry a balance. But most people will get better returns choosing one of the best no-annual-fee credit cards or the best credit cards for balance transfers.
Typically, the Chase Slate Edge℠ is appropriate for you if you have at least good credit — that is, a FICO score of at least 670. If your score isn't in that range, you'll do better by applying for a card geared to those with fair or average credit. There are even credit cards for bad credit you could consider instead.
The Chase Slate Edge℠ is subject to the Chase 5/24 rule, which means if you've opened five or more cards (from any bank) in the past 24 months, you won't be approved for the card. You also aren't eligible if you already have this card, or have received a welcome bonus offer from one in the past 24 months.
The Chase Slate Edge℠ is a Visa card.
Despite its edgy name, the Chase Slate Edge℠ isn't actually made of metal. It's made of plastic.
